Conducting Biography

Craig Anderson began his conducting career in 1998 upon taking his first teaching post. In 2001, he was appointed Musical Director of the Newmilns and Galston Band, leading the ensemble from the Second Section to the Championship Section within three years. During this time, Craig also served as Musical Director of the Dunaskin Doon Band and Resident Conductor with the Kirkintilloch Band, further establishing his reputation within the Scottish brass band scene.

In 2005, Craig was part of the RSNO Brass Quintet during a visit to Campbeltown Brass in the Mull of Kintyre—an engagement that proved significant, as he was soon offered the position of Musical Director. Under his leadership, the predominantly youth-based band made remarkable progress, rising from the Third Section to the First Section in just three years and collecting numerous prizes along the way.

In 2006, Craig took on the role of Musical Director with Kingdom Brass, one of Scotland’s leading brass bands. Under his direction, Kingdom Brass achieved some of its most notable results, including podium finishes at the Scottish Championships and the Spring Festival. Highlights include winning the Senior Trophy in 2006 and qualifying for the prestigious Grand Shield in 2009.

During a short break from conducting due to an increasing teaching and performing workload, Craig studied at the Alan Withington conducting course in 2011. This wonderful course brought fresh enthusiasm and new techniques to his skill set and on return he accepted the role of musical director of the Unison Kinneil Band. In his five year tenure, the band progressed from the second section to the championship section winning many additional prizes and providing innovative concerts and community projects.

In 2016 Craig enjoyed a new role as part of the conducting team at the Whitburn Band.

Beyond brass bands, Craig is also active with Concert bands and Orchestras. In 2009, he was appointed Musical Director of the Wind Farm course run by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, further showcasing his versatility and commitment to music education and performance across genres.

Since 2020 Craig has been musical director of the Bathgate Band.
